On August 22, the Meeting on Education Cooperation between Guizhou Province and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was held at the West Campus of Guizhou University (GZU). The event was attended by Zou Lianke, Deputy Secretary of the Education Work Committee of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education, and Director of the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education; Sze Chun-fai, Under Secretary of the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR; Yang Wei, Party Secretary of GZU; and representatives from more than ten universities and institutions from both Hong Kong and Guizhou. Zhang Jie, Deputy Party Secretary of GZU, presided over the meeting.
In his speech, Zou Lianke stressed that the time is right to deepen educational cooperation between Guizhou and Hong Kong. He expressed hope that both sides would remain committed to their original goals by strengthening exchanges in educational concepts, building confidence in shared collaboration, and enhancing resource sharing. He called for determination in advancing mutual development through the establishment of a pragmatic and efficient cooperation mechanism. Zou also emphasized the need for sustained enthusiasm in expanding cooperative areas, patience in fostering collaboration, and perseverance in overcoming shared challenges, ultimately working together to build prominent cooperation brands and cultivate exceptional talent.
Sze Chun-fai acknowledged the close exchanges between universities in Guizhou and Hong Kong, highlighting the diverse forms and areas of collaboration, including talent cultivation, student recruitment, employment, and scientific research. He believed that this conference would further enhance educational exchanges and cooperation between the two regions, enabling them to move toward multi-faceted, multi-level, and in-depth development, while jointly achieving new milestones.
Yang Wei welcomed the guests and gave a brief introduction to GZU, covering its history, disciplinary development, educational scale, research achievements, and international cooperation. She emphasized that education is a long-term endeavor and that educators bear the responsibility of building a strong foundation for the nation’s future. Yang expressed her hope that GZU and universities in Hong Kong would continue to deepen their educational cooperation, exploring new models and approaches that address student development from multiple perspectives, support faculty growth in diverse ways, and leverage a broad range of research resources, ultimately facilitating greater cultural exchanges between the two regions.
At the meeting, the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education and the Hong Kong Education Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding.
Representatives from seventeen universities delivered speeches and participated in extensive discussions. Yang Wei proposed that universities in Hong Kong strengthen their collaboration with GZU in cultivating young talent, such as by recommending outstanding doctoral graduates for employment at GZU. She also emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship, and scientific research.
In recent years, GZU has achieved fruitful results in faculty and student exchanges, academic collaborations, and scientific research projects with Hong Kong universities. In 2023, GZU’s National Key Laboratory of Green Pesticides entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with the National Engineering Research Center for Tissue Restoration & Reconstruction at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
