On October 21st, the 2023 Master’s Degree Supervisor Training Conference of Guizhou University was held at the Xishan Theater. Li Fei, Vice President of GZU, attended the conference, and over 600 newly appointed master’s degree supervisors and graduate education management staff participated. The conference was hosted by Zhang Wei, Dean of the Graduate School.

Li Fei conducted a specialized training session for the attending supervisors. He emphasized the need to comprehensively implement the party’s educational policies and the guidelines of the Guizhou Provincial Conference on the High-Quality Development of Higher Education. He pointed out that it is essential to carry out the fundamental task of fostering virtue and shaping people, focusing on building a team of graduate supervisors with strong political qualities, noble professional ethics, sustained academic vitality, and outstanding teaching abilities. Around the diverse types of guiding relationships, Li Fei highlighted the importance of teaching students according to their individual abilities. He expressed the hope that graduate supervisors should consciously enhance their sense of mission in educating for the Party, cultivating talents for the country, fulfill their responsibilities, fully play the leading role of supervisors, and contribute to the high-quality development of graduate education at Guizhou University.

Professor Jin Zhichao from the National Key Laboratory of Green Pesticides shared his experience with the attending supervisors. He pointed out that improving thesis writing ability is a lifelong task for graduate supervisors for writing reflects comprehensive thinking ability, showcases knowledge reserves, and is a direct reflection of learning ability. Graduate supervisors should serve as both academic mentors and life mentors, not only emphasizing the cultivation of students’ research abilities but also caring about their personal lives. Furthermore, supervisors should continuously improve their own abilities to guide students in their growth and success.

Professor Chen Yanbo, Dean of the School of Philosophy and Yangming College, gave a speech themed on “How to Be a Good Graduate Supervisor”, interpreting the unified understanding of “subject teacher” mastering the profession and “personal teacher” nurturing virtue. He encouraged graduate supervisors to correctly understand their roles, adhere to academic ethics, and guide students in the direction of their lives. He also emphasized the need to strengthen organized scientific research work among graduate students and improve their thesis writing skills.

On the afternoon of October 21st, all the graduate education units at the university organized collective learning of the graduate education management regulations and systems for newly appointed master’s degree supervisors.

Regularly conducting training for graduate supervisors is an important means for the university to strengthen the construction of the graduate supervisor team and improve the quality of graduate education. Next, the Graduate School will continue to perfect the supervisor training model, enrich the training content, and effectively enhance the guiding ability of graduate supervisors and the quality of graduate education at our university.
