On the morning of May 22nd, a team of academicians jointly commenced the unveiling ceremony for the establishment of the “Academician Garden” of Guizhou University. The academicians included Xiang Zhonghuai, Rong Tingzhao, Chen Wenfu, Chen Jianping, Zhu Youyong, Li Tianlai, Kang Zhensheng, Zhang Shougong, Liu Zhonghua, Song Bao’an, and Ma Kejian from the Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Tu Yongqiang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. During the ceremony, the academicians symbolically planted trees to mark the spirit of scientific enlightenment, representing the hope of also cultivating young scientific minds for the future. Pan Wenbo and Zhu Enlin, director and deputy director, respectively, of the Department of Crop Production of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, attended the event. Other participants included guests from the Institute of Plant Protection of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, National Agricultural Technology Information Center, Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Guizhou Province, Chinese Society of Agriculture, as well as more than 100 representatives of teachers and students.

At the ceremony Professor Xiang Zhonghuai, who hails from Southwest University and is an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, first demonstrated a Chinese calligraphy work titled “Guizhou University’s Academician Garden". He then joined the unveiling ceremony for the “Academician Garden” with Professor Rong Tingzhao from Sichuan Agricultural University, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Professor Li Jianjun, secretary of the CPC Guizhou University Committee; and professor Ma Kejian from Guizhou University, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Everyone present joined in the celebration.

Following the ceremony, the academicians, together with some faculty and students, planted twelve osmanthus trees. With shovels and buckets, they filled in the soil and watered the trees. It is hoped that Guizhou University will see a rapid advancement in the same way as the newly-planted verdant trees will swiftly grow in the garden.

The students participating in the activity remarked how they will view the academicians as role models and devote themselves to scientific and cultural development. Likewise, they will stay prudent and sincere, and always keep learning and improving their skill sets.
