On the morning of April 2nd, Dr. Liu Wei from the University of Alberta in Canada, at the invitation of the Graduate School of the Party Committee, gave a lecture entitled “The Internationalization of Higher Education: Definitions, Objectives and Strategies”.

The Office of Graduate Affairs of the Party Committee, Office of Teacher Affairs, Teacher and Teaching Development Center, and Office of International Relations jointly organized the lecture. Attendees included: Shi Qinxian, Director of the Office of Teacher Affairs; Zhang Xiaobin, Deputy Director of the Office of Graduate Affairs; Wu Jing, Deputy Director of the Office of International Relations. Also present were leaders in charge of international projects from different colleges as well as some outstanding young teachers. Altogether 80 people attended the lecture, which was hosted by Liang Fangyi, Deputy Director for the Office of Teacher Affairs.

Dr. Liu Wei, currently the head of the Global Academic Leadership Development Program at the University of Alberta in Canada, is in charge of curriculum and management for international training programs. During the lecture, Dr. Liu explained the aim and definition of international education from three perspectives:  humanistic education, instrumental competition, and idealism. He reviewed matters pertaining to the internationalization of higher education in China and Canada and also discussed issues related to international education such as means, patterns, national strategies, and challenges. Additionally, he analyzed major educational differences in higher education systems between China and Canada in a vivid and comprehensible way.

Following the lecture, the Office of Teacher Affairs held a meeting intended to promote the international project of Cardiff University. Shen Lin, monitor from the first group of visiting teachers at Cardiff University, shared his learning experiences from the visit.

Dr. Shen vividly presented a panoramic picture of study and life of the group members in the UK. He also shared his insights on course instruction and cultural experiences during his stay at Cardiff University. As a result of his four-month study trip, he has developed a new perspective on the mission of teachers in the new age, which is to "propagate the doctrine, impart professional knowledge, and resolve doubts".

The application process for the second year of GZU’s Cardiff University teacher training program is about to start. In order to achieve an effective outcome, GZU will facilitate a broader selection of various subjects, and consider more upper-level administrative staff.
