On November 1st, the conference on the establishment of the 2018-2022 Higher Education Steering Committee under the Ministry of Education (hereinafter "Steering Committee") was held in Beijing. Chen Baosheng, secretary of the Leading Party Members' Group and minister of the Ministry of Education, attended the meeting and delivered a keynote speech. The meeting was chaired by Lin Huiqing, member of the Leading Party Members' Group and vice minister of the Ministry of Education. Ms. Lin Huiqing announced the decision from the Ministry of Education on the Establishment of the Higher Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education for 2018-2022. GZU has 24 people elected as committee members. This total ranks 47th among all colleges and universities in China.
The 24 personnel selected from GZU to serve on the Steering Committee include: Li Jianjun, Song Bao'an, Xiang Shuwen, Leng Chuanli, Zhuang Yong, Tan Dexing, Qin Likang, Zhang Wen'e, Chen Xiang, Wei Xiaoli, Jin Yingruo, Tang Yanlin, Cui Haiyang, Zhang Liyun, Liu Min, Xie Quan, Lin Qian, Zhang Fugui, Liu Renxiang, Zhi Junrui, Lu Shiming, Dai Yinggui, Hong Mingyong and Yin Jian.
The Higher Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, composed of the most authoritative experts in higher education in China, serves as the top organization with high-level advisers. It aims to conduct research, provide consultation, give guidance, carry out evaluation and offer services for the higher education across the country under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. The newly-established Higher Education Steering Committee accentuates the importance of booming undergraduate education in China, a fundamental task for universities. The committee is expected to help universities be more capable of fostering talents and realize the essence of connotative development of universities in China. It is believed that the committee will play a contributing role in giving advisory guidance to colleges and universities. The current Steering Committee covers two comprehensive categories and 109 programs and majors, and includes 40 subordinate Steering Committees. The 5,550 members are drawn from a cross-section of 865 sectors in the country, including 431 universities, 283 colleges and 151 institutions (e.g., departments, unions, companies, associations, and research centers).
