Introduction
Mingde College, an independent college which enrolls undergraduate students, was established by Guizhou University in June 2001. It is a full-time comprehensive college approved by the Guizhou Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education. In September 2013, Guizhou University signed an agreement with Jiangxi Tellhow Group Co., Ltd. to jointly run the college and to build a new campus funded by the Tellhow Group. Located in the Huaxi University Town, the beautiful campus covers an area of 955 mu (about 157 acre), with a student accommodation totaling 120,000 square meters, laboratories totaling 37,000 square meters, a library totaling 24,000 square meters, and a gymnasium totaling 6,000 square meters.
The College currently has a faculty of 430, including more than 320 full-time teachers, 19 professors (5.93%), 102 teachers with senior professional titles (31.87%), 135 lecturers (42.18%), and 25 teaching assistants (7.81%). Among the full-time teachers, there are three who hold doctoral degrees (0.9%), 168 who hold master's degrees (41.11%), 149 (46.56%) who hold bachelor's degrees, and two PhD candidates. Moreover, there are 30 counsellors in the College.
The College was approved to enroll 2,880 students in 2017, including 2,791 undergraduate students, 50 minority students for the preparatory study program, and 39 students for the preparatory plus undergraduate study program.
Adhering to the idea of “focusing on faculty development, program design, scientific management, and value promotion", the College has continuously deepened teaching reforms, innovated management models, strengthened quality and characteristics, and optimized management. It has formed a discipline system that focuses on engineering majors, but also covers other disciplines such as economics, management, literature, law, and arts. The College aims to cultivate technology talented professionals with comprehensive abilities.
According to the disciplines of Guizhou University, the College is divided into seven departments: Information Engineering, Bioengineering (health management), Civil Engineering, Digital Media, Economics, Management Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. In 2017, the College has an enrollment of 37: 17 engineering majors, 10 management majors, three arts majors, two economics majors, two science majors, two literature majors, and one law major.
Based on the general principle of “Better Enrollment, Better Education, Better Students, and Better Employment,” the College, in addition to meeting the requirements of running a national independent college, will deepen the reform of teaching models and curriculum systems and comprehensively promote program design. With the support of the Tellhow Group, the College aims to cultivate talent for the projects of big data, big culture, and big health.
The College’s philosophy regarding program design and development is based on the basic principles of industry prominence, market orientation, and maintaining advantages. Through this it will adjust and optimize traditional majors, enlarge and strengthen advantaged majors, steadily develop distinctive specialties, and focus on building brand specialties.
The College is dedicated to cultivating professionals with practical abilities. Students actively participate in various competitions at various levels across the country and have achieved excellent results including a silver medal in the third National Youth Volunteer Service Contest and second and third prizes for the National College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Due to solid professional knowledge and strong practical abilities, graduates are well received by employers. The employment rate has been over 95% for the past three years.
At the same time, the College continues to strengthens its exchanges and cooperation and strives to build a domestic first-class application-oriented university. In recent years, it has signed exchange agreements with Taiwan Daye University and Taipei City University of Science and Technology and has sent more than 150 outstanding students to these universities on exchange programs.
In order to enhance young teachers' awareness of education and scientific research and to improve their scientific research capability, the Group's Board of Directors has allocated special research funding to the College to gradually improve its scientific research management and vigorously promote its scientific research. The College has made remarkable achievements in science, technology, and social science and has won awards at various levels. President Wu Tianxiang and Executive Vice President Luo Weidong have won a number of national and provincial science and technology awards. In addition, teachers of the College have been granted one provincial teaching achievement award, granted 30 national invention patents, received 526,000 yuan in research funding, published 26 academic papers and three textbooks, and have participated in six academic exchange activities. The College is now showing great momentum and development in research.
