Life in GZU
Library

The Guizhou University Library has a collection of 3.86 million paper
books, 2.1 million e-books and 59 Chinese and foreign languages
databases. After the merger of Guizhou University, Guizhou University of Agriculture and Guizhou University of Technology in 1997 and 2004, the Library has three branches on three campuses, with a total area of about 90,000 square meters. The library adheres to the concept
of 'people-oriented, readers first,' and applies computer networks and modern technology to provide literature and information services
integrating data collecting, exchanging and releasing information,
borrowing and searching for more than 60,000 teachers and students.

Collection:
Given the library’s prioritization of its public service system, the
University has strengthened its construction and development by
standardizing the management of the three branches and highlighting

the features of each branch in terms of collection. The West Campus Library, the main library, mainly collects books on natural science available for 'checkout.' The North Campus Library mainly collects books on social science and the South Campus Library serves as the back-up library. The three branches have formed a system that meets demands for teaching and research literature.

While collecting abundant hardcopy resources, the library actively promotes the construction of digital resources. It has large number of e-books and 51 databases of literatures in Chinese or foreign languages (including CNKI, CQCIP, Wanfang and other Chinese full-text databases, as well as ACS, EI, IEL, Sage, Springer, Wiley and other foreign language full-text databases). In general, the Library has a collection of both printed literature resources and electronic literature resources meeting various demands

Service:
The library uses the Jinpan Library Integrated Management System to complete the construction of the unified and standardized machine-readable catalogue, realizing the unified automation management and free interlibrary loan system between the three branches. The Library is equipped with facilities or systems to facilitate readers, such as the library guiding system, informational electronic screens, bibliographic inquiry terminal, automatic access control system, self-service loan system, self-service copy printing equipment, and reader integrated service desk. The Library also has convenient, atmospheric reading areas. The stacks and the reading rooms are all available for open-shelf reading and borrowing. All in all, the integrated management of collecting, borrowing, reading and searching guarantees great services for readers. In addition to providing regular services such as literature reading and electronic reading, the library also offers services like inter-library loan, reference consultation, sci-tech novelty retrieval, and literature searching training. While meeting the teaching and research demand of Guizhou University, it also tries to provide service for other universities and the society within its capabilities.

To meet the needs of the readers, the library is open seven days a week. The digital resources are available 24 hours a day. The Library makes effort to help teachers and students make full use of these resources. For the new students, it releases a “Guide to the Readers of Guizhou University Library' and 'The Database Use Guide' and even opens a course on literature searching. In addition, it hosts a ' one-hour lecture' on the use of literature resources and holds other relevant lectures for individual colleges. All these greatly improve readers' ability to utilize library resources.

Informatization:
As the primary contact of the campus network, the library’s network has Gigabit backbone cabling, 100M bandwidth for desktop, and more than 500 wired network information nodes. The wireless network covers all the reading areas of the library. An information network platform with advanced performance and complete functions has been established. It has six dedicated servers of various types, a disk array system with a capacity of 120TB, and six digital resource mirror stations and more than 400 information terminals.
